چکیده

We cross-correlate the galaxies brighter than mB = 18 in the Virgo cluster with the radio sources in the NVSS survey (1.4 GHz), resulting in 180 radio-optical identifications. We determine the radio luminosity function of the Virgo galaxies, separately for the earlyand late-types. Late-type galaxies develop radio sources with a probability proportional to their optical luminosity. In fact their radio/optical (RB) distribution is gaussian, centered at logRB ∼ −0.5, i.e. the radio luminosity is ∼ 0.3 of the optical one. The probability of late-type galaxies to develop radio sources is almost independent of their detailed Hubble type, except for Sa (and S0+S0a) which are a factor of ∼ 5 less frequent than later types at any RB . Giant elliptical galaxies feed “monster” radio sources with a probability strongly increasing with mass. However the frequency of fainter radio sources is progressively less sensitive on the system mass. The faintest giant E galaxies (MB = −17) have a probability of feeding low power radio sources similar to that of dwarf E galaxies as faint as MB = −13.

The Local Black Hole Mass Function from 2dFGRS Radio Galaxies

Radio emission from early–type (E and S0) galaxies usually signals the presence of a central supermassive black hole. If radio luminosity and black–hole mass are correlated, then we can use the large sample of radio galaxies observed in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) to estimate the local (z < 0.1) black–hole mass function for early–type galaxies. Integrating over this mass function yi...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

We test the hypothesis that radio galaxies are a random subset of otherwise normal elliptical galaxies. Starting with the observed optical luminosity functions for elliptical galaxies, we show that the probability of an elliptical forming a radio source is a continuous, increasing function of optical luminosity, proportional to L. With this probability function and the luminosity function of no...

A sample of radio galaxies spanning three decades in radio luminosity - I. The host-galaxy properties and black-hole masses

The results of analysis of HST I−band imaging of a sample of 41 radio galaxies spanning three orders of magnitude in radio luminosity at redshift z ≃ 0.5 are presented. These results represent the first stage in a coordinated programme to study the connection between radio luminosity and host-galaxy properties, black-hole masses and cluster environments in radio galaxies spanning a wide range i...
